Hernia repair prices look similar until you notice which operation each one describes. Open and keyhole repair of the same hernia are published thousands of pounds apart.

One provider's own comparison
Practice Plus Group publishes a comparison of its own prices with three other groups in the South West, marked correct as at June 2026, showing hernia surgery at £3,449 for its Emersons Green hospital, £3,288 at Spire Bristol, no price available at Circle Bath, and £4,060 at Nuffield Taunton. That is a provider comparing itself with competitors, so treat it as their published claim rather than as an independent survey, but it does show how far the same operation ranges within one region.
What each price basis means
- Fixed
- Practice Plus Group states that the quote you are given is the amount you pay, covering prescriptions, aftercare, equipment used and any extra complications that arise, and that diagnostic tests needed after your initial consultation are charged separately.
- Guide price from
- Benenden Hospital defines a guide price as an estimate based on information at the time of enquiry, not fixed or guaranteed, and an indication of the minimum you may incur. It lists complexity, length of stay, choice of consultant and implants among the things that move it.
- Treatment price and total package price
- Spire publishes two numbers: the treatment figure and a larger total package including the initial consultation and aftercare. Spire states the from price is the minimum cost of the procedure and that consultant and anaesthetist fees are set independently of the hospital.
Before you compare two quotes
- Confirm which technique each quote assumes, open or keyhole. Comparing a published open price with a keyhole quote is the most common way to be surprised later.
- Confirm whether mesh is included. The NHS says a repair usually places a thin sheet of mesh over the hernia, fixed with small stitches, though sometimes stitches alone are used.
- Confirm whether a bilateral repair is priced as one procedure or two.
- Ask what is included if you need to stay overnight, and how many follow-up appointments are covered.
Whether your hernia needs repairing, and by which technique, is a decision for a surgeon who has examined you. The NHS notes that an inguinal hernia may not need treatment if it is not causing symptoms, and that repair may be done to relieve pain or to prevent obstruction or strangulation.
